As we march into March, the Parents Association would like to begin by saying THANK YOU to all the amazing parents that helped make our First Annual Valentine’s Day Dance Party a success. We also held our Teacher Time Raffle during the dance and it was also a great success. Winners were announced during the dance and then contacted via email thereafter. So another thank you to all the wonderful parents and students that participated in the raffle.

We could not have done it without your support and consistent effort in making things fun for the students of P.S. 196, the School with a Heart.
Our first event of March will be the Wellness Council’s Mindfulness Parent Workshop which will take place on Saturday, March 5, 2017. For more information please click here...

The first full week of March will be a fun one for our students because they will get the opportunity, with their class, to visit the Scholastic Book Fair and purchase their own books. If you would like, you can send in money with your child and there will be parent volunteers at the Book Fair to help them choose books. A flyer also went out towards the end of February which showed some of the books that would be sold at the fair. The Book Fair will also be running during Parent Teacher Conferences in the Library.

Please click here for our Book Fair’s flyer/class schedule.
Speaking of Parent Teacher Conferences, March 9th will be a half day for all students, dismissal being at noon followed by Parent Teacher Conferences from 1pm-3pm and 5pm-8pm. A notice was sent home with your child so you can schedule your conference with your child’s teacher. If you did not receive one, please contact either your child’s teacher or class parent. During the Parent Teacher Conferences, class parents will be asking you to fill out Parent Surveys, we would greatly appreciate it if you would fill out the survey right then and there. If you do not receive a Parent Survey, please contact either your child’s teacher, class parent or the school’s Parent Coordinator Ellen Maurer @ . Any class with 100% return of the survey will be rewarded with a pizza party.

After School will also be provided on that day, please click here for more information on the after school program on March 9th
Need to blow off some steam, then why not join us in learning some methods on title boxing during our Fitness Funday? Our next Fitness Funday will take place on Sunday, March 12th at 10am followed by a bagel brunch. Please click here for more info.
Want to see some improvements to our school, then please vote and help decide on how $1,000,000 that is distributed from the New York City Participatory Budget (PB) to our City Council District (Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, Rego Park, Richmond Hill) should be spent. This year's ballot includes technology upgrades and bathroom upgrades for P.S. 196.  Voting will take place from Saturday, March 25th through Sunday, April 2nd. People can vote online, at Council Member Koslowitz’s office and various pop-up sites, yet to be announced. Voting can also take place at P.S. 196, both before and after school, if we have enough parent volunteers to work at the voting tables during the week of March 27—March 31. Please volunteer so P.S. 196 can have better voter turnout and the best chance possible to win funds for these needed upgrades. There are sign-up sheets going around or at the front desk.  For more information or to help volunteer, please contact Bruce Grossberg @
There’s plenty more in store for our school. We will continue our monthly Fitness Fundays, we will also be hosting a plant sale for the students just in time for Mother’s Day, along with another Restaurant fundraiser, this time at Shake Shack and having our very successful International Night. If you like to represent a country for International Night, please contact the Parents Association’s Vice President, Tasneem Malbari @ . Details on all events to follow once the Parents Association sets dates.
And please remember that we are ALWAYS looking for parent volunteers. Reach out to us at if you interested in helping with an event or if you have an idea for a fundraiser. We depend on parent support and volunteers to make great things happen for our children.
